Breakdown
CGST and SGST apply within a state; IGST applies between states. It is one or the other, never both.
How this works
Adding GST is straightforward: multiply by the rate and add it on. Removing GST is where people go wrong, because you cannot simply subtract the percentage.
If a price of 1,180 includes 18% GST, the pre-tax value is not 1,180 minus 18% (967.60). The 18% was added to the smaller base, so you divide instead: 1,180 ÷ 1.18 = 1,000. Subtracting takes the percentage off the wrong number and understates your taxable value every time.
Within a state, GST splits evenly into CGST and SGST. Between states, the same total is charged as a single IGST amount. The total is identical either way, so the split matters for your filing rather than for the price.
Rates are an input here rather than a built-in table, because GST rates vary by product category and change over time. Check the rate that applies to your goods rather than assuming the one you used last year still holds.
